Say What? "I need a mate"

When I went in to buy pool passes for the family, the woman in charge of processing was already familiar with me. She said what sounded like $118 and I said "Is that 118 or 180?" Triggered a flashback involving words that sound like "ate".

This was about 25 years ago, on a fishing trip while we were relaxing on a boat.

Friend (puts his hand out to me): I need a mate.
Me: What? What's wrong with me?
Friend: What?
Me: I am your mate, right?
Friend: Yes...what are you talking about?
Me: Why would you need a mate when I am right here?
Friend: What are you talking about?!?
Me: What was it you said to me?
Friend: Uh...when?
Me: Just now, when you said you need a mate. What, am I invisible?
Friend: Oh! No, you moron! I need a (enunciates carefully) BAIT.

I should've figured that out since we were on a freaking boat and he was holding his fishing pole... It's easy to confuse how a certain part of a word is pronounced, like "eighteen" or "eighty", let alone "mate" or "bait". ;)

That conversation could've gone the complete other way.

I have a feeling this happens quite a lot for you. Forgive my giggling :)

what a strike to the ego...and all over a minnow. How hard would it have been to saw worm or minnow? I imagine a lot less rhymes with or "looks like" those words. as with Mynx...forgive the giggling but his face must have been priceless.

Seems like i've had conversations like that and I can hear...

Did you catch anything or did your friend get a new mate after all

Hehehe, I have problems with the "ate" words myself! And the ending words with ty" too.

Once, I got into a car accident. My car crashed through a farm fence that was holding cows in a pen. Cops came. Cops asked me how fast I was going.

"I was going 15!" and the cop said "50?!?!"

I said "yes, that's what I said, 15"

Cop gave me a perplexed look. My sister jumped in and corrected the cop. When looking back, if I had been going 50 mph on that road, I would have ended up much further down the hill than I did. I wonder what that cop was thinking when he thought I said I was going 50 mph... "why would she ADMIT that?!"

ADSL - you think? LOL

Mynx - you're allowed to laugh at my expense. ;) You're right, I often have trouble with words that end in certain patterns.

Jewels - it was a worm. Yes, his expression was priceless...and etched into my memory.

Vodka Logic - haha! I caught some fish and he didn't. He didn't believe that I could catch a fish like that. I tried to explain it's just the way my life is...always at the right time.

Furry Bottoms - I've had interesting run-ins with cops like that. hehe

I'm so fishing-challenged I would've made the same mistake.
