Q & A #14

Q: (from Formspring widget) So I saw that you learned to sign when you were 25. How long have you been deaf?

A: I contracted spinal meningitis when I was 13 months old. After I woke up from a coma, the doctors discovered that I was deaf. The hearing nerves in my ears were damaged/destroyed from the high fevers.

Bonus Halloween pics!

Almost done...

All done!

My demonic mask...

...with black acrylic paint (not black cream - forgot!) covering my eyes...

Love the Halloween pix!

I had an aunt that had spinal meningitis and lost her hearing.
I work in the healthcare field and I almost never hear of anyone contract SM anymore.

Do you have ANY residual hearing?

GoE - thanks. The whole SM thing wasn't understood in the 60's and 70's. That's why you rarely hear of that happening now.

Excellent question about my hearing...I do have some residual hearing. In fact, I forgot to replace this post with something that happened on Saturday.

I'll write about it on Wednesday. Look for it. :)

Wow! Raw honest blog! I really like it. Love the halloween photos. Though the last one creeps me out a bit. Interested to read about what happened Saturday.

Copyboy - I just scheduled that for Wednesday. Just come back then and you'll learn a bit more about me. As for the costume, I scared two kids at the party so much that they refused to look at me and kept their distance at all times. ;)

Love the mask and pumpkin! You're quite the artist! ;)

I did wonder if you were born deaf or not. Thanks, as always, for sharing.

Nitebyrd - the trick is to use a small knife...like a pocketknife. Big knives, bad! Small knives, good! ;)

You said that you've wondered if I was born deaf or not and you got your answer indirectly when I answered someone's question. Please do feel free to ask me any other question that hasn't been posted...you never know - that may not have been asked yet.
